About Photographer - fashion photographer, fashion photographer in India, indian fashion photographer, fashion photography in India, photographer, photographer india. - Interview with Tarun Khiwal by Nipun Sharma
Picture this... you enter an air-conditioned room... the cranberries playing softly in the background... with a big black pyramid shaped dim yellow light hanging from a stand on your left...under which is a leather sofa... and on the sofa a topless model... showing of attitude to a still camera. (That model was unfortunately male)
Behind this all-bearing camera I find the person I came looking for , Mr. Tarun Khiwal. He takes a look at me, and nods as if approving the mental picture he had made of me from our conversations over the phone. "Be with you in a minute," he says as I sit, side by side admiring the studio... the leather sofa now at 10 'O' clock.... and across the room a big soft board with pictures of lots of models. Welcome to what could be heaven I say to myself.
Mr. Tarun Khiwal officially started photography on the second of April, 1990 when he was hired by the photography legend Mr. Hardev Singh to work as an assistant in his studio. He left being an engineer just to pursue a more interesting life and so he came into photography. A year and a half later he moved to Mumbai, and came back in 1994, to work as an assistant to another photography maestro, Mr. Prabudho Dasgupta. Along side he also started his own studio. With many awards and accolades in his name, such as Kingfisher Fashion Photographer of the Year, 2004 and many others, Mr. Tarun Khiwal has been selected as one of the twelve photographers for the Hasselblad Masters Calendar for the year of 2005. He is the only Indian ever to have been selected for Hasselblad. This puts him in the ranks of international photography legends such as Albert Watson and Mary Elen Mark.
